What Aluminum Alloy Numbers Mean
Have you ever wondered what the numbers on aluminum alloys meant? Is it something just for show? Or does it really serve a purpose?
According to Metal Supermarkets, this numbering system, known as the Aluminum Numbering Systems (ANS), is designed to label and designate a specific alloy. Each digit has its own use, and here is what they’re for:
- First digit identifies the primary alloying element.
- Second digit indicates the modification done to one of the alloying elements. When 0, then there’s none.
- Lastly, third and fourth digits identify the specific alloy. They’re often arbitrary (except for 1XXX series). They give the minimum aluminum percentage north of 99% and for all else, they identify it in the specific series.
FOR EXAMPLE: 1060 Aluminum means that (1) it is pure aluminum, (0) no modifications, and (60) it has a pure aluminum content of 99.60%.
FOR EXAMPLE: 2024 Aluminum means that (2) Copper is the main alloying element, (0) no modifications, and (24) identifies it in the 2XXX series.
Wrought Aluminum Table
Here’s a table that shows you the main alloying elements possible for different aluminum alloys.
1xxx | Pure Aluminum |
2xxx | Kupfer |
3xxx | Mangan |
4xxx | Silizium |
5xxx | Magnesium |
6xxx | Magnesium and Silicon |
7xxx | Zink |
8xxx | Andere |
Understanding 3003 Aluminum
So, if we were to take that knowledge in understanding 3003 aluminum, it means that Manganese is the main alloying element, they’re pure with no modifications, and they’re identified as (03) in the entire 3XXX series.
3003 aluminum is a non-heat-treatable alloy known for its excellent corrosion resistance and good overall strength. Composed primarily of aluminum with a small addition of manganese, it is stronger than pure aluminum while remaining lightweight and easy to work with.
They aren’t as strong as other alloys as it is classified to have moderate strength and workability, but it’ highly flexible and usable in many business sectors and industries.

What is 3003 Aluminum is Used For?
Due to their composition, 3003 aluminum is often used for a wide library of applications. However, the more common uses and applications for them would include:
Automobilbau
Automotive applications of 3003 aluminum focus on parts that require strength without adding unnecessary weight. Examples include fuel tanks, radiator fins, and vehicle panels. Its ability to resist corrosion ensures long-lasting performance, even in demanding conditions like high humidity or exposure to road salt.
Construction and Roofing
Aluminum 3003 is frequently used in construction, especially for siding and roofing. It is perfect for making waterproof, long-lasting panels that can survive hard conditions because of its exceptional corrosion resistance and lightweight nature. Building facades, gutters, and downspouts that require little upkeep over many years are a few examples.
HVAC Systems
In HVAC systems, 3003 aluminum is essential for manufacturing air conditioners, heat exchangers, and ductwork. Its ability to conduct heat efficiently, combined with its lightweight design, improves system performance while reducing energy consumption.
The Food and Drink Sector
The food and beverage industry uses 3003 aluminum to make food packaging, storage tanks, and cookware. It is ideal for things like pie plates, beverage cans, and culinary equipment because of its non-toxic qualities and resistance to rust. Additionally, it satisfies safety requirements for handling liquids and food.
Schiffsausrüstung
Due to its superior resistance to water corrosion, 3003 aluminum is frequently used in marine environments. It’s a preferred choice for making storage tanks, boat hulls, and dock equipment. Its lightweight properties also make it easier to handle during manufacturing and installation.
